Government report scams and road pricing
The Government instigates a report into any area that it finds "difficult"
While the report is being prepared the Government trots out the old line "we wouldn't want to pre-empt the report" in answer to any difficult questions it is asked
When the report comes out and if the Government likes it (which it usually does as it has set the terms of reference and appointed the person making the report), then it jumps on its high horse and starts to remind us at every opportunity that "these are the findings of an independent report!"
If the Government doesn't like it then "we will be acting on some aspects of the report..." but of course only the least significant ones.
In fact I can't say that I am wholly opposed to road pricing. (Incidentally, I used to work for Bosch who were trying to sell the technology to Government to do this at least 10 years ago, but of course there was no interest then), but of course I would prefer it if people just used their cars more sensibly, maybe I'll think a bit more about that and try to come up with some positive suggestions later - no doubt someone on the web has been obsessing about this already for a few years and has compiled all the relevant data and listed the options - I'll have a look. I wonder if anyone in the Government has access to the internet?
