Wise words

One of the three publications we subscribe to is The Week, a fantastic digest of all the week's news*. This week it reported a quote by Hannah Arendt that really resonated for me:

"The sad truth is that most evil is done by people who never make up their minds to be good or evil."

I guess it's a bit like the one that goes something like:

"For evil to triumph, all that is required is that good men do nothing."

But I think the first quote is even more aposite in today's technocratic consumerist world, where people don't have the time (or more likely inclination) to think about what is good or evil, right or wrong. It often seems that they are too busy aquiring (or trying to aquire) wealth, or for the less smart/motivated "communicating" with each other:

"...I'm here, are you there?"

"Yes I'm here, you're not alone."

"Oh, phew, that's great...

...I'm still here, are you still there?"

Are mobile phones the new opium of the masses?
